We are Skip and Beth Swiger. We’ve been married for 17 years.
We have 4 hilarious children: Sofia, Jonah, Daisy, and Jude.
We have loved God for many years, but the last 8 years we have been on a journey of deeper faith and reliance on Him. In 2006 God directed Skip to shift his focus from “building an empire” of selfish ambition to building up the individuals that crossed our paths each day and bringing God’s love and comfort to them. He made spending time with God his top priority and God gave us insight into His heart and His direction for our lives.
Over the next few years, God continued to reveal His heart and the things that He cares about, which in turn gave us many opportunities to soften our hearts and change to be more like Him. Our hearts had forever changed, and the culmination of these changes was July 2009 when within a period of 4 weeks we lost our house, our business, and our infant daughter was stillborn. We had to make a choice as a family about whether to be bitter and try to blame God or if we were going to continue to have faith in Him. We chose to continue to serve God and told Him “where else could we go? You have the words of eternal life” (John 6:68). That decision has led us deeper than ever in our trust in the Lord.
In February 2010 we felt that God was again making a big shift in our lives. We prayed and felt like God was allowing us to travel to Latin America. Through a series of confirmations, God revealed that we were going to go to the Central Highland region of Costa Rica. We felt like God wanted us to sell or give away any of our “stuff” that could be replaced when we came back, so we did. This was a huge shift for me because I held onto my stuff rather tightly. In May 2010 we showed up in San Ramon, Costa Rica knowing no one in that city and only a little Spanish and planning to be there for the next few months. While we were down there we fell in love with the people and the culture and particularly the people at the church La Vina Palmares. http://www.vinapalmares.com/ We believe that God is going to make a big difference in the city of Palmares and use that city as part of the wonderful things that He has planned through our lives.
After Costa Rica, we volunteered for several years in our hometown in St. Petersburg, Florida, and in November 2013 we made the move to Big Island, Hawaii. We were foreigners again, learning a new culture and meeting new people… and loving every minute of it. Living in Hawaii taught us a lot of incredible things, mostly lessons from the people that we met there. The entire island is filled with beauty and mystery and the very air seems to filled with a different kind of electricity- pure awe in the atmosphere- and I connected deeply with the aloha, a tangible feeling of kindness. The culture is so warm and kind with a heavy emphasis on family bonds and intimacy/ openness. Our time there made a deep impact in our lives.
Currently we’re living in southwest Florida and we’ve been experiencing a really sweet time of love and encouragement from our community of friends. Our family has strengthened this past year, and we’re feeling strong as we look toward our next adventure.
This is the story of our life: lovely, messy, sweet. Welcome to the family.
